Talking to students about AI-assisted writing

A practical starting point for a conversation about drafts, tools, and the writing process.

Begin with the process

Ask the writer how the piece developed. A conversation about the assignment, sources, and revisions can offer context that a score cannot.

Keep the questions specific to the work: where an argument began, why an example was chosen, or how a passage changed between drafts.

Look at the supporting materials

Notes, outlines, and version history can help explain the writing process. Give the student space to describe how they used editing or generative tools.

Read highlighted passages with the surrounding work. A report can guide questions without settling the answer.

Make expectations clear

Explain which forms of assistance are allowed before the next assignment. Concrete examples are easier to follow than a broad instruction to avoid AI.
